[the night is young, the city is full of oddities, and there is a Monster sitting on Tabby's shoulders, clinging to her head like he's afraid he'll fall off. he also does his best to hide behind her hair when someone passes by, looking at everyone like they've got lobsters crawling out of their ears.

he is not used to people, okay.]

You're like... a bottomless pit, or something.

[she retrieves her hand so she can drop a larger rock in-- really listening for it to hit the bottom, this time]

Monster does not know how much can go in. Maybe he will get full eventually.

[there's no drop from the larger rock. it just disappears.]

Huh.

[...gfdjk she picks him up and kind of shakes him up and down! listening for rocks or anything clunking together]

[...he sounds about like any kid would if you picked them up and shook them a little. but besides that filling up her head, there's a very soft, light sort of clunking noise in there. ...might be the rocks. it's about a rock-sized sound.]

[...man, she hopes that's the rocks, and not... like... his brain or something.]

Hmmm. I need something that jingles.

[...oh, of course-- keys.

In go the keys to her room! And she tries the shaking test over again]

[...clunk. clunk-clunk jinglejingle clunk...]

Monster is getting dizzy...

[sorry, Monster, it's not over yet]

--What the hell? How does this even...

[...more pebbles? then testing to see if he feels any heavier...]

Uuu, ah, Monster is starting to get full...

[he's starting to sound kind of sick, actually D: all this shaking...]

Oh.

[...yeah, okay, she just decides that none of this makes sense. She has reached the end of her critical thinking ability]

Stop being a backpack, then.

...okay!

[he is now a 80-pound rock.]

...Monster.

[he is a happy rock! :D]

...Why are you a rock?

[...he doesn't really have a good reason to be a rock, so he has to think about that for a minute.]

Monster is full of rocks. So now Monster is a rock.

...That's how that works?

[yep. taking him seriously, here.]

Monster thinks so! But he can be other things. Rocks are heavy.

[this is very serious business!]

...Do you still have my keys?

...yes!

[he flattens out into a rolled-up rug... and when he un-rolls himself, several rocks and her keys are laying there in sort of a pile near the middle.]

Found them!

--Uh. ...Oh.

[whoa. she wasn't really expecting that one. as if she half expects him to suddenly change into something more menacing, like a bear-trap or something, she plucks her keys gingerly out of the rock pile. jingling them in her hand to make sure they seem pretty normal]

[they are quite normal! once she's got them, he curls back up (rocks and all) and starts inching away like... a giant... carpet caterpillar.]

[she's just watching him scoot along... until she eventually remembers where they are.

after glancing over her shoulder, she nudges the carpet roll with her foot]

See-- this is the kind of thing you probably shouldn't to do where people can see you.

Rugs aren't supposed to... crawl around.

[he rolls over. instead of unrolling, he turns back into a kid. he's on his back, of course, but lifts his arms to wrap himself around one of Tabby's legs. like deadweight.]

Kaaaay.

[oh whatever, she'll just drag him, then]

...You are totally incapable of doing anything normal, aren't you?

It's normal for Monster!

[he will clamber back up onto her back. here we go again.]

Monster doesn't know what humans do. He doesn't see them very often. They confuse Monster.

[better that than dragging him]

Yeah, well... they confuse me too, and I used to be one.

That's why it's good to come out here and watch 'em.
