Highschool AU // Anger Management
Twice a week, you get pulled out of one of your other classes and put in the counseling office to talk about your ~feelings~ with a bunch of other kids whose personalities range from "got into a fight once on accident and doesn't actually need to be here" to "should probably be taking medication for whatever their problem is".
These sessions last about an hour, and are managed by a counselor who thinks that all students are beautiful flowers who should feel free to express themselves and just need a chance to feel loved. That counselor is also a huge pushover, so it isn't hard for the kids themselves to run the show.
Fun anger management activities include:
Watching Movies - Enjoy such educational shorts as: "Each Child is Different," "Anger: What are you Really Trying to Say?" and the bluntly titled, "Don't Get Mad". But with the lights off and the counselor falling asleep at their desk, who knows what really happens during movie time...
Partner Activity - Everyone is assembled into random pairs. The assignment is for each person to tell their partner about a time that someone got mad at them and how that made them feel, and at the end, the pairs have to sum up their talk to the rest of the group. What could go wrong?
Coloring Time - It's time to express yourself in a calm, creative way. There are coloring pages, crayons, safety scissors, soothing music playing in the background... Hey, there are even snacks! Maybe this "anger management" thing isn't actually so bad...
"I feel" Statements - In pairs, small groups, or even going around in a big circle, you are highly encouraged to respond to conflict-situations (both real and hypothetical) with the phrase, "I feel _______ because _______." This is a healthy way to express your feelings. Maybe you can even patch things up with that bully who has been making your life miserable!
Blowing Off Steam - So if things maybe aren't going so well and people are getting agitated, the counselor may announce that it's time to play a game (cleverly titled "Blowing Off Steam") where students blow plastic cups across the surface of the table to try and be the first one to knock theirs into a bag on the other side of the table because this is apparently calming and not at all ridiculous??
Foot Massage - Yeah, someone thought it would be a good idea to put one of those mechanical foot massagers in the counseling office. It seems like there's always either a weirdly long line of people waiting to use it, or no one touches it out of fear of being "that guy" just sitting by themselves in the foot massager. It's pretty weird.
